Portland’s “sweet” business owners give back to help Harvey victims.

Portland’s “sweet” business owners give back to help Harvey victims.

Portland business owners are a rare breed. Rather than focusing entirely on profit (hey, everyone’s gotta make a living), many, if not most, Portland businesses focus on giving back to their community and helping others wherever they can.

Enter Frank Taylor, owner of Sweet Jam – the fantastic southern food and music venue. Taylor grew up in Dickinson, Texas, and announced he will give all the money raised on the opening day of Sweet Jam’s new Northeast Portland location to the residents of Dickinson, Texas.

Truth or Myth? You don’t need air conditioning in Portland.

Truth or Myth? You don’t need air conditioning in Portland.

The weather in Portland definitely has a heated reputation throughout the country. The entire Pacific Northwest, but Portland and Seattle specifically, is known for its torrential downpours threatening to drown every living thing, however the summers here are gorgeous.

With typically mild temperatures, low humidity, and weeks without rain (sometimes nearly 60-day stretches without rain, in fact), Portland is a great place to be in the summer. However, many residents will tell you that you don’t need air conditioning here. Let’s investigate.

The crackers are coming to Portland! Why is Cracker Barrel so popular?

The crackers are coming to Portland! Why is Cracker Barrel so popular?

Everyone has a dream of what they want to accomplish before they die. Some want to climb Mount Everest. Some just want to visit Paris or Hawaii. Still, others have stranger dreams – like visiting every Cracker Barrel location in the world.

Portland is filled with a variety of weird and wonderful single-location restaurants, however we’re not exempt from chains, either. Cracker Barrel, the somewhat controversial Southern-themed restaurant and store, is opening another location in the Portland area next year, and it’s attracting their particular brand of clientele to come visit the wonders of Stumptown.

Portland has many nicknames – Stumptown, Slabtown, the Rose City, Naked City USA – but the one that’s becoming more and more popular is “Silicon Forest.”

Time to get your drink on! Amazon delivers beer and wine to Portland in two hours or less!

Where do we sign up?! (actually, click here if you want to start the addiction)

What could make it better? How about delivery of beer and wine in two hours or less?

Mad marathoner makes media mess over missing marathon.

Portlanders take running very seriously. Just wander the streets of any of Portland’s five (yes, five) quadrants, and you’ll come across runners everywhere. So, when Energy Events cancelled its Vancouver USA Marathon, you can bet Portlanders won’t take such action lying down.

Oh, Boyd! Portland loses another local coffee company to “Big Brother Brewing.”

Portland’s coffee scene maintains a huge reputation throughout the country (and the world) for excellent, locally-owned roasters and brewers of some of the best coffee you can drink.

Unfortunately, with success comes opportunity, and outside business interests have started scooping up our local shops, making them parts of their conglomerates (witness the purchase of Stumptown Coffee back in 2011).

Boyd Coffee Company, what might be Portland’s oldest coffee roaster – it was founded in 1900, announced on August 21, 2017 that they will be acquired by Farmer Brothers (NASDAQ: FARM), a publicly-traded firm.

Why is Portland weird? What is Keep Portland Weird?

Why is Portland weird? What is Keep Portland Weird?

Portland has always been a haven for weird people and weird events whether it’s the infamous Portland postman who pooped on a patio a few years ago, the zombie-filled car that crashed on a freeway, or the extremely popular Portland Saturday Market which attracts crowds of oddities.

Regardless, Stumptown’s an odd burg, and here we’ll talk a bit about why it’s so weird and also where the heck the whole “Keep Portland Weird” phenomenon started in the first place.

(Hint: it wasn’t Portland’s first).
