Knowing that the Pacific Northwest is basically the birthplace of rain (we practically invented the stuff), you’d think it wouldn’t be a big deal to Portlanders when weather started falling from the sky.
The truth couldn’t be further from this idea as media outlets all over Stumptown blew up with BREAKING NEWS as a few drops of rain fell from the sky overnight.
We’re not sure if it’s the residents or the media, but, man, do the news stories fly when it hasn’t rained in awhile and then it starts. It’s been 57 days with no rain in Portland, the third-longest rain-free weather streak in the history of recorded weather with the #1 spot taken by 71 days without rain in 1967 and #2 being 62 days in 1984.
We have to give the media a break – it’s not just Portland. Weather is one of the only topics that everyone can have an opinion about since we all live in the world, and it’s a lot less divisive to talk about the weather instead of something more controversial like, say, politics.
Given everything crazy going on in the world right now, we guess it’s okay to talk about the weather. Speaking of which, looks like we’re headed for another dry spell. Time to freak out!
