What’s the deal with Groupon and Google Offers?

Do you Groupon? Do you enjoy Living Social? How about do you… accept Offers from Google? Erm… partake of Goffers? Hmmm… Google Offers will take a little more thought to come up with the right invented verb. Regardless of what you call them or which ones you use, deal-a-day coupon sites are springing up all over the place.

Click-Z, an online marketing website, interviewed Powell’s Books to find out that they are planning to try Google Offers later in June. If a company as popular as Powell’s Books is talking about trying out Google Offers, we started wondering – what’s the deal with these sites?

While at Stanford, Ph. D. candidates Larry Page and Sergey Brin created Google. Pretty badass, right? WRONG! You want to know what’s badass? Badass is when two Portland State University grad students used a variety of data to create a map of Portland that shows the level of badassery in neighborhoods across the city. (more…)

Portlanders are fanatics for hybrid and electric cars (and motorcycles).

Ford announced that Portland will be one of the launch cities for the new all-electric model of their Focus later this year. This makes sense, Portlanders love all things hybrid and electric. Heck, you can even pick up an electric sportbike from Brammo down the street in Ashland.

At first, we were excited – electric cars use no gas, right? However, we’d also heard that since coal-based electricity systems have a huge negative impact on the environment, a lot of electric cars’ benefits are burned out. It made us wonder: why do we see so many environment-loving Portlanders driving electric and hybrid cars?

Portland’s always been renowned for strange bikes whether it be the high-flying double-deckers or the laid-back almost-pedestrian-because-they’re-everywhere recumbent bikes. When it comes to cars, Portlanders love Volkswagen, Subaru and anything hybrid. Well, what happens when Volkswagen’s luxury brand, Audi, gets together with Portland’s hardwood-bicycle manufacturer, Renovo? Oh, yeah, baby – hardwood performance bikes!

Hey AT&T, where’s Portland’s 4G??

One of the many great things about Portland is that it’s big enough (without being too big) and techie enough that we tend to be a test city for lots of new technologies. Unfortunately, AT&T doesn’t feel we’re ready for the next generation of cell speeds (4G/LTE).
