Portlanders generally understand the basic concept of Labor Day – it’s a public holiday celebrating those of us who have to work or labor throughout the year. However, if that’s the case, why do so many retail stores hold sales requiring minimum-wage workers to work the holiday?

Portland loves comics. We have a ton of comic book stores sprinkled throughout the city. Plus, every year near the end of the summer, we have the Rose City Comic Con – a festival where Stumptowners have the excuse to dress up like their favorite comic book and movie heroes and villains (like we need an excuse to do that).

Portland is filled with a never-ending variety of events with a lot involving food… and beer. Man, do we love food and beer. At the beginning of September each year, we turn our stomachs to the Bite of Oregon, an annual event featuring purveyors of food and beer from all around our amazing state.

Parenting in Portland can be a tough gig. Parenting styles vary widely here as Portland attracts so many different kinds of people. Some parents want to encourage free expression and complete trust, while other parents may dream of locking their kids in a dungeon to prevent inappropriate behavior.

Why is Portland called Portland? This must be an easy one, right? It’s called Portland because it’s a port city.
Wrong!
The city of Portland started in 1843. The Port of Portland wasn’t created until nearly 50 years later in 1891 when the Oregon Legislature decided to dredge a shipping channel from the city to the Pacific Ocean.
So, we got curious – why is Portland called Portland?
